Between Montessori, Waldorf, progressive, traditional, child-led and more, it almost feels lately like parents are, themselves, expected to have a degree in education to understand and navigate the educational options available to their child.
BASIS Independent Schools, and their latest Upper West Side campus, BASIS Independent Manhattan, take the guess-work out of work out of what good education looks like with a clear focus on readying students for the skills they need to excel in the 21st century of commerce and innovation: skills like an unparalleled foundation in all academic disciplines, but also skills like collaborative problem-solving, connection with others, self-direction, and empathy.
Surprisingly, this type of focus on 21st century skills and inclusion of subjects like Mandarin, engineering, project based learning, the arts, disciplinary sciences, logic, and economics (to name a few!), all taught by professionals with subject expertise, in a culture where everyone believes students can learn at high levels, is, in fact, an innovation in the context of the landscape of schools around the U.S. – and even the world.
It is for this reason that the BASIS network of schools were chosen as the first case study representing the United States for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s new PISA4U platform, an online, global, collaborative learning program for school improvement.
Don’t miss their special April 6 Information Session at their future campus at 795 Columbus Ave. The evening’s program will cover an introduction to their mission, philosophy, the opportunity to meet faculty, staff, and hear directly from the visionaries behind the curriculum and academic approach geared towards 21st century readiness.
