Welcome to FiDi!
The New Amsterdam Library has been hosting Toddler Story Time for years and it’s a great way to introduce your children to the public library system. Every Thursday, toddlers from 18 months to 3 years and their parents/caregivers can enjoy interactive stories, action songs, fingerplays, and spend time with other toddlers in the neighborhood. Story time is a great way to encourage listening skills, vocabulary and imagination. Participation is free and no reservation is required and easy stroller access.
And, don’t forget to sign up for a free children’s library card. Children from birth to age 11 can have their own cards; applications must be signed and completed by a parent or guardian. To learn more log onto http://www.nypl.org/locations/new-amsterdam.
On your way out, stop by City Hall Park, just across the street and enjoy the Fall weather and enjoy the leaves changing colors.
If you haven’t heard, J&R, Jr. has opened up a fantastic kids store in FiDi. They have been hosting some great events and classes and this FiDi Mom is very excited to find out that The Creative Kitchen has teamed up with J&R Jr. to offer hands-on cooking classes. Kids make age-appropriate recipes that focus on themes, colors, numbers, and shapes. Toddlers have fun with their adult chaperone (required) cooking and eating and a creating a delicious dish in each class. Having attended a some of her classes in Chelsea, I can promise that both you and your budding chef will have a great time. And, the best part is that you don’t have to clean up. Now that is a meal worth making!

One of the FiDi’s most historicial landmarks and a participant in this great event is the Fraunces Tavern® Museum which is the site of George Washington’s farewell to his officers in 1783. The popular 18th century tavern also served as a meeting place for planning pre-Revolutionary War activities by the Sons of Liberty and hosted the Nation’s first Office of Foreign Affairs and the War Office. Today the Museum offers two historic period rooms and six additional Colonial, Revolutionary War, and Early American themed exhibits.
