Public School Bus Update. If your children are enrolled in the transportation program with the NY Public School system, you may have been informed of the following, per the Office of Pupil Transportation:
Effective December 31, 2013, the Atlantic Bus Company and affiliated companies (Amboy, Staten Island Bus and Atlantic Queens Bus) are no longer providing school bus service for the NYC Department of Education. All bus routes operated by Atlantic Bus Company in the past will now be operated by other bus companies. Normal bus service for General Education and Special Education students will start after Winter Recess on January 2, 2014.
Visit the School and Student Transportation Search page on the OPT website to find contact information on the bus company that will now provide service for your child’s route, and to confirm the route number that your child is assigned.
For FiDi Families that were on the Atlantic Bus Company route, please call 718-346-9600 for confirmation that the bus transit will resume on Thursday, January 2nd. Bus routes, pick up times and bus ID numbers will apparently stay the same. But, it is strongly advised that parents contact the office directly.
For additional information, please contact 311 or 718-392-8855 or http://schools.nyc.gov/Offices/Transportation/default.htm (look for Operations Update).
Christmas trees in Lower Manhattan…If you are wondering where to purchase your Christmas tree, then head on over to Whole Foods in Tribeca. They have a great selection and wide range of sizes. Plus, there is no other tree stand that is selling 7ft – 8ft trees for less than $100 (based on our research). All trees are selling for $50 and if you need it delivered, you can expect to pay an additional $15, if the delivery is within walking distance or $25 if it requires 4-wheels and that is not a stroller delivery. For an additional $20, you can also purchase and place a tree stand for easy set up at home. The super friendly folks that are managing the tree service will bundle wrap your treasured tree and it will be delivered on the same day.
Dates: Now until the last tree is gone or December 25th, which ever comes first!
Times: Daily from 7a – 10:30p
Delivery Fee: $15 or $25
Location: 270 Greenwich Street

The Downtown CoNNection shuttle bus is a free bus service that is sponsored by the Alliance for Downtown NY and Battery Park City Authority. The bus (affectionately known in our apartment building as the “bumpy bus” connects Lower Manhattan from Battery Park City to Battery Place along Water Street to the South Street Seaport area, including the Financial District. It is stroller friendly (as long as you know how to fold up your stroller) and an easy way to shuttle the kids to Battery Park from FiDi, a drop off in Tribeca after a movie at Regal Cinemas or anywhere in between. The shuttle service is available 7 days a week from 10:00am – 7:30pm.
If you are a parent with little one’s that insist that they are too big for a stroller and yet walking with them throughout downtown is about as fun as stubbing your toe, you may want to consider the Downtown Connection shuttle service as the Uber for the stroller set. The Downtown CoNNection buses run approximately every 10 minutes, picking up passengers at stops marked with the “Downtown CoNNection” logo.
FiDi Families Insiders: One of the best features about the buses besides the free (woohoo) ride and convenience is the fact that they added GPS to each bus and you can track the locations of the various buses on their website to time your arrival at the designated pickup/drop off spots. It’s a great feature as you can time your departure to the shops at the WFC while the kids nap or take the kids for an adventure to the Staten Island Ferry. To check on status of a shuttle bus log onto www.nextbus.com.

Have you heard the buzz about Uber, the most amazing car service every invented? Okay, that might be an exaggeration, but I used it recently because I needed to get from the Makers Faire in Queens back to Lower Manhattan in time for a very important birthday party. So, I downloaded the app, entered my contact information (including my credit card details) and voila…an estimated cost appears on your phone, the estimated time for arrival appears on your phone and you simply wait for your driver and clean car to arrive! It was Uber exciting and I’m officially converted to an Uber user. Sooo, my FiDi Families Friends, use the following promotional code (0z6o0) and receive $10 off your first Uber ride.
Exciting; no more standing on a street corner with kids in tow, hoping that a Yellow Cab will round the corner! This is exciting stuff, FiDi Families!
