Author Talk at the China Institute

January 25, 2016 by Deirdre McAndrew

Author Talk at the China Institute

Author Talk at the China Institute. The China institute will be hosting an Author Talk featuring Beautiful Su: A Social and Cultural History of Suzhou, China with Stephen Koss.

Suzhou, China, is widely considered to be “paradise on Earth” based on its natural beauty and a rich history. Suzhou has gained the attention of poets, scholars, statesman, and travelers from afar since the earliest days of Chinese history.

Stephen Koss will discuss his latest work, Beautiful Su: A Social and Cultural History of Suzhou, China. This book paints a vivid picture of the importance of Suzhou to the Chinese nation, its people, and its collective ethos. Koss guides readers from its rise as a major cultural and trading center for more than 2000 years of Chinese History.

For centuries, Suzhou was a center of wealth, beauty, intellectual achievement, culture, fashion, and commerce. It was said to be the Paris of the imperial empire, with a touch of Florence’s artistic flourish, Venice’s canal-laced charm, Heidelberg’s academic achievement, and Amsterdam’s commercial dynamism.

Koss traces the city’s story from its founding to its present-day rebirth. It currently known as a center of hi-tech, pharmaceutical, and textile manufacturing. These aspects are characterized by urban expansion, a fast-growing middle class, modernization, and historical and cultural preservation. The book is rich in local historical and cultural content and filled with engaging  anecdotes and mini-biographies.

Stephen L. Koss is also the author of the book China: Heart and Soul and currently lives in NYC.

Attend this Author Talk and bring your friends!
