9/11 Memorial & Museum Commemorates the 18th Anniversary of Recovery Efforts at Ground Zero

May 16, 2020 by Denise Courter

9/11 Memorial & Museum Commemorates the 18th anniversary of the end of the recovery efforts at Ground Zero

Each year on May 30, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum honors the courage and sacrifice of all 9/11 rescue, recovery, and relief workers, as well as survivors and members of the downtown community, by marking the anniversary of the formal end of recovery operations at Ground Zero with a commemorative ceremony.

The formal end of the recovery operations at Ground Zero concluded on May 30, 2002, nearly nine months after the attacks. Traditionally, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum marks this occasion through commemorative activities on the Memorial and inside the Museum. But this year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to do so. Instead, we will lead an online ceremony to mark the 18th anniversary of the end of recovery operations and also, the one-year anniversary of the dedication of the 9/11 Memorial Glade.

Please join us virtually on Saturday, May 30, at 11:00 a.m. as we pay tribute to you, to everyone in the 9/11 rescue and recovery community, and to all who are suffering or have died from exposure to 9/11-related hazards and toxins in the aftermath of the attacks, especially at a time when pre-existing health conditions leave this population particularly vulnerable. This year, we will use this occasion to demonstrate our gratitude and appreciation for the men and women on the front lines of response to the COVID-19 health crisis – honoring our frontline responders, then and now.

Date: Saturday, May 30th

Time: 11:00am

The ceremony will be available online. Please visit the website HERE.

9/11 Panel and Discussion: Hope and Healing

Please join Lower Manhattan residents and New Yorker’s for an evening of hope, healing, storytelling and connecting on Sunday, September 8th.

Eighteen years after the day that changed the world forever come the stories of 9/11 survivors and first responders who spent years literally living through the aftermath. and rebuilding their lives within the downtown community. As Lower Manhattan continues to rebuild and flourish, we stop to reflect and go back in time to the days, weeks, and months following September 11th as we look forward to how the community now known as the Seaport District, along with Tribeca and Battery Park, has found new life amidst its revitalization.

The event will begin with a 60-minute moderated conversation, followed by audience Q&A and a reception hosted by The Howard Hughes Corporation providing time to socialize, enjoy food and drinks, and share experiences that define our Lower Manhattan community.

Life is funny. A year ago I was celebrating 20 yea Life is funny. A year ago I was celebrating 20 years of calling NYC home. A year later, our family is on a crazy career adventure in Miami, with a lot of unknowns.

But, we do know that we only get one life to live and jumping in feet first is the only way to live life to the fullest, at least in our minds 😂.

We are already in love with the Miami weather, the happy people, the gorgeous beaches 🏝 and the day tripping way of life. We arrived in FL w a suitcase each and a mask 😷. Happy that we are surrounded by mask-wearers. Wasn’t sure what to expect. But, we will be back in NYC this summer. Lots of decisions to make between now and then. But also lots of fun and exploring over the next few months.

The silver lining of the Covid world we live in is remote learning allows us to travel and say yes to new beginnings. Stay tuned for updates on the next chapter for our website, too.
