Nature + Play at Battery Park City Parks

 

Are you looking for an outdoor activity, that is safe and local?

Celebrate the nature found in our beloved Battery Park City parks. Pick up a self-guided worksheet that will invite you to tour the gardens investigating plants and trees, as well as the pollinating insects and birds that visit the parks of BPC. Activity is self-guided.

FiDi Families Insiders: Participants are expected to bring their own pencils and clipboards. Masks and contact information required upon arrival.

Program is first-come, first-served for up to 20 children with accompanying adults.

Participants must maintain six feet of physical distance between households. All programs will be held in accordance with New York State reopening guidance.

Date: Tuesday, November 10th

Time: 3pm – 4pm

KickOff Location: River Terrace at Murray Street

Fee: Free

Age(s): All ages welcome and children must have adult in attendance.

To participate, just show up, but remember: Program is first-come, first-served for up to 20 children with accompanying adults.

Chess for Kids with Battery Park City Authority

 

Battery Park City Authority hostss a variety of classes, workshops and events for kids and adults. Did you know they offer chess classes for kids, ages 5 and older? Downtown kids are invited to learn chess and have fun playing with other students at the beginner or intermediate levels. An experienced and enthusiastic chess instructor leads lessons in the popular strategy game for children in small, focused groups suited to your child’s level. The sessions begin on January 7th.

Playing chess improves concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving, pattern recognition, strategic planning, creativity, synthesis, and evaluation.

Date: Tuesday’s (recurring through March 31st)

Time(s):

Beginners > 3:30p – 4:00 pm for 5 – 7 yo

Intermediate > 4:10 pm – 4:50 pm for 7 yo + older

Advanced > 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm for 8 yo + older

Location: 6 River Terrace

Fee: $195 for 13 sessions (ask for a pro-rated fee, if applicable)

Dockappella Festival at Battery Park City - Celebrate Fall!

 

One of our favorite downtown Fall events, is the annual Dockappella Festival at Battery Park City. It’s a day filled with music and singers from around the country.  The a cappella groups will perform indie hits, pop favorites, and jazz, and are sure to impress everyone with their talent. Get inspired by the vocal stylings of the finest college a cappella groups in the Northeast. Six ensembles will showcase their pitch-perfect vocal renditions from a diverse mix of musical genres. Featured performers include groups from NYU, Northereastern, Columbia and Berklee College of Music.

Bring a blanket, a picnic lunch and enjoy the music with New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty as the backdrop!

Date: Sunday, October 6th

Time: 1 pm – 3:30 pm

Location: Wagner Park

Age(s): All ages welcome

Fee: Free

Outdoor Ed-Ventures: Orienteering in Battery Park (FREE)

Looking for an outdoor adventure in your backyard? Spend the last Saturday in September in Rockefeller Park and attend a mini-lesson and navigate your way around Battery Park City using a compass. Participants will learn to read a map and make a bearing. In the digital age of technology, show your kids how to navigate without the help of GPS!

Date: Sunday, September 29th

Time: 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Cost: FREE

Location: Rockefeller Park (North end of Battery Park City, west of River Terrace)

FiDi Families are invited to join us for a bilingual storytime (French and English) filled with songs, stories and play! For ages infant to  6 years old; must be accompanied by an adult. Please note: August 9th & 16th classes are canceled. Classes resume on Friday, August 23rd. 

FiDi Families Insiders: There will be toys afterward for playtime with attendees and the Librarian.
