Chinese New Year Family Festival at China Institute

Chinese New Year Family Festival

Kick off the Year of the Rat with China Institute’s signature Lunar New Year Celebration for families. The festival opens with a lion dance followed by New Year-themed workshops and activities including dumpling making, lantern-making, educational workshops, interactive storytelling, paper cutting, New Year treats, crafts, and a special Year of the Rat puppet show by Chinese Theatre Works. Attendees can also visit the “The Art of Chinese New Year,” an interactive installation celebrating the Chinese New Year holiday and its traditional visual and performance arts.

Date: Sunday, February 2

Time: 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Location: 40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor (China Institute)

Age: All ages

General Admission: Free ticketed admission; $5 for kids’ workshop.

Special Opening Musical Event at China Institute

China Institute’s new “Percussion and Play” program is an interactive music class designed for younger learners and their caregivers. Participants will experience the colorful world of Chinese percussion instruments through stories, demonstrations and the playing of drums and cymbals, while being immersed in a Chinese-language environment.

Based on the ‘Mommy and Me’ model of early childhood music education, the program will emphasize the fundamentals of rhythm and melody as well as introducing simple musical notation. Children and accompanying adults will enjoy exploring a combination of traditional Chinese folk tales, Chinese language, and percussion. No musical experience or knowledge of Chinese is needed.

Date: Sunday, March 10th 

Time: 12 pm – 2 pm (Demo classes start at 1:15 pm)

Location: 40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor (China Institute)

Age: All ages

The festival opens with a lion dance followed by New Year-themed workshops and activities including dumpling making, lantern-making, Music at China Institute workshops, Chinese New Year Woodblock Printing with Dr. Li Mingjie, a puppet performance by Yu’er Liu, face painting, New Year treats, games, and a special music performance by the Stephanie Chou Trio.

Learn the Game of Go on Lunar New Year

No school? No problem! All ages are invited to celebrate the Lunar New Year learning the fun and challenging game of Go which originated in China over 4,000 years ago. Led by champion Go players from China Institute, this talk and hands-on workshop will guide participants through the history and general play of the game.

Cao Jun’s Art of Splash-Ink at China Institute

Cao Jun’s art blends classical Chinese tradition with modern artistic features. From depictions of wild animals to his recent, more abstract paintings, he employs ink and splashing to render interplanetary mountain landscapes, water, and flowers. Cao Jun will discuss how he merged traditional and contemporary approaches to create a new kind of art. The event will be conducted in Chinese.
