Teaching Kids to “Eat the Rainbow”

October 30, 2017 by Rachel Witzel

Teaching Kids to "Eat the Rainbow"

Kids tend to automatically choose unhealthy foods when they are given the option of what to eat. They choose sugary, starchy or cheesy foods. Easy-to-remember rules and concepts (like “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”) can help everyone eat healthier.

The idea of “eating the rainbow” (including as many different colors as possible on your plate over the course of a day or a week, or meal by meal) is one that even small children can master.

It’s a good idea to remember these simple memory tricks:
● Red foods keep our red hearts healthy.
● Orange foods like carrots help us “C” (see) better.
● Yellow foods make you “glow” like the sun, inside and out, by boosting your mood and
giving your skin a healthy sheen.
● Leafy green foods help us build our own “stems” and “leaves”–that is, our own strong
bones, nails and hair.
● While real animals rarely come in colors of blue and purple, imaginary animals often
do–and foods in these rare colors can help to build our brains, help our memories, and
make us more creative. (Purple cabbages also look a little like brains.)

Below are a few activities to encourage kids to make more creative and colorful plates:
● Rainbow parfaits (or skewers) for breakfast: we scoop red strawberries, orange
mango, yellow banana or pineapple, green kiwi, and blueberries onto the surface of a
bowl of yogurt. (This also works without yogurt–layer the fruits directly onto a bamboo
skewer.) Bonus points for creating beautiful patterns with all of the colors!
● Rainbow kimchi for lunches: we combine an dab of red gochujang (a mildly-spiced
Korean pepper paste) with orange and yellow grated carrot, green scallions and purple
cabbage, tossing with salt and apple cider vinegar, and serving alongside fried rice or
glass noodles.
● Rainbow guacamole for snacks: we stir together red cherry tomatoes, orange and
yellow bell peppers, green guacamole and purple-blue onion.
● Rainbow snow cones for special celebrations: w e create simple syrups using a
variety of colorful produce, boiled and strained through a fine-mesh sieve (dragonfruit
makes a beautiful hot pink!). Then we encourage kids to experiment with combining
colors and designs. Order up some pipettes and an ice maker from Amazon, and you’re
in business for under $50.

Summer Snacking with Babybel Cheese

July 28, 2016 by Denise Courter

Kids are in the midst of summer and its almost a given that they are running around, skipping naps, going to bed late and enjoying more than their share of treats and snacks. Summer is a great chance for kids to indulge in sweets and we were thrilled when the folks from Babybel gifted us with some healthy options and information, to help us keep the kiddos happy and healthy with Babybel cheese.

Families are out and about and enjoying warmer days, summer travel and outdoor activities. Traveling with kids and taking them to summer camp is one thing, carrying enough snacks to keep their little tummies full and satisfied is another. With Mini Babybel cheese it makes it easy to bring along a healthy snack for your kids that they will enjoy as they play around this summer. Kids need snacks and when making the decision, parents are seeking snacks that are tasty (72%), nutritious (66%), and easy to consume (50%), according to a recent Harris Poll. Mini Babybel cheese encourages families to provide a fun, delicious treat for the summer. Mini Babybel is a 100% natural cheese with a rich and creamy taste that delivers at least four grams of protein and 15% of an individual’s daily calcium needs. Individually portioned and easy to pack, it’s a convenient option for family snack time and summer travel.

Snacking is becoming an essential part of families’ diets as they snack more and eat snack foods with meals. Instead of giving your kids candy or chips which is an easy snack this is the option to give them something that’s healthy and tasty! Mini Babybel cheese is a great snack for your whole family to enjoy.

Life is funny. A year ago I was celebrating 20 yea Life is funny. A year ago I was celebrating 20 years of calling NYC home. A year later, our family is on a crazy career adventure in Miami, with a lot of unknowns.

But, we do know that we only get one life to live and jumping in feet first is the only way to live life to the fullest, at least in our minds 😂.

We are already in love with the Miami weather, the happy people, the gorgeous beaches 🏝 and the day tripping way of life. We arrived in FL w a suitcase each and a mask 😷. Happy that we are surrounded by mask-wearers. Wasn’t sure what to expect. But, we will be back in NYC this summer. Lots of decisions to make between now and then. But also lots of fun and exploring over the next few months.

The silver lining of the Covid world we live in is remote learning allows us to travel and say yes to new beginnings. Stay tuned for updates on the next chapter for our website, too.
