Holiday Season

The Salvation Army Angel Tree holiday program in Lower Manhattan – Sponsor a Child or Senior this holiday season!

November 26, 2019 by Denise Courter

The Salvation Army Angel Tree holiday program in Lower Manhattan - Sponsor a Child or Senior this holiday season!

Join FiDi Families in supporting Angel Tree and give back to families in need with the Angel Tree Toy Drive!

The Salvation Army Angel Tree holiday program provides new clothing and toys for local children in need. Specifically, the Downtown Angel Tree supports the 14th Street Salvation Army location, which serves children and families from 23rd Street to South Ferry. After a child has been registered as an Angel, The Salvation Army makes a promise to provide Christmas for them by fulfilling three items from their wish list.

New this year is the option to sponsor a senior.

Once you contact the volunteers at Angel Tree, you will be assigned a child, along with their wish list. Please adhere to this list as these may be the only gifts the Angel children receive this year. We want every child to have what they’re hoping for on Christmas morning so if for any reason you cannot complete their entire request, please let us know. If you want to send extra new toys or clothes please feel free, as there is no shortage of need.

Last year Angel Tree supported over 1000 children; we are the #1 contributor of Christmas list sponsorships at the 14th Street Salvation Army.

The Angel Tree process is as follows: you request a child or senior citizen and you will receive their wish list, which can include anything from Legos and dolls to winter coats and gloves. It runs the gamut, but no single gift is extravagant, and in almost all cases, these are the only gifts they will receive this year.

On average, the cost of sponsoring someone’s wish list is approximately $100. Any gifts above and beyond the wish list are greatly appreciated, but not expected.

All gifts are due by Sunday, December 15 at 15 Broad Street!

To learn more and to join this great cause, please send an email to 15BroadAngelTree@gmail.com

The evening, hosted by Cubby and Christine from 106.7 LITE FM, kicks off with a special charitable presentation to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, one of the nation’s leading industry-based HIV/AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations, and A Place for Kids, a nonprofit organization providing safe and educational after school programs for elementary school children in the New York City Chinatown Area.

Following the presentation, enjoy traditional carols from a local choir along with performances by the Broadway casts of Phantom of the Opera and Mean Girls.

All New Nintendo 3DS XL - Hot Gift this Holiday Season

What is the NEW Nintendo 3DS XL you may be wondering? It just the hottest gift for this coming holiday season and the best way to play games on the go. Nintendo launched their latest system with a #3DSMyWay Girls Love Gaming event, to focus on including female players in the gaming world. The focus was on girls, but both boys and girls were in attendance and all seemed to be equally happy to participate.

The New Nintendo 3DS XL handheld gaming system has dozens of high-tech features including a unique 3D screen that enables a 3D view without the need to wear special glasses, cameras that allows the user to take 3D photos and view them right away on the screen and Nintendo eShop where you can browse various games (both new and classic games),watch trailers and shop. If all of these features aren’t enough, connect to the internet, watch YouTube videos and use Hulu and Netflix *if you have an account.
Our young gamers had a chance to sit with Nintendo gaming experts and learn about a variety of games, strategy and fun tips and tricks. My kids loved the chance to have one on one time with these great Nintendo ambassadors.

FiDi Families favorite part is the Parental Controls, a feature that every parent will love (thank you Nintendo!)  It allows you to restrict the game content by ratings.

Guests were also treated to a celebrity appearance by Laura Marano, star of the Disney channel series “Austin and Ally” and “Boombox” singer. She greeted attendees, shared her experiences with gaming and #3DSMyWay and encouraged girls to embrace gaming and technology.

Life is funny. A year ago I was celebrating 20 yea Life is funny. A year ago I was celebrating 20 years of calling NYC home. A year later, our family is on a crazy career adventure in Miami, with a lot of unknowns.

But, we do know that we only get one life to live and jumping in feet first is the only way to live life to the fullest, at least in our minds 😂.

We are already in love with the Miami weather, the happy people, the gorgeous beaches 🏝 and the day tripping way of life. We arrived in FL w a suitcase each and a mask 😷. Happy that we are surrounded by mask-wearers. Wasn’t sure what to expect. But, we will be back in NYC this summer. Lots of decisions to make between now and then. But also lots of fun and exploring over the next few months.

The silver lining of the Covid world we live in is remote learning allows us to travel and say yes to new beginnings. Stay tuned for updates on the next chapter for our website, too.
