NYC Math Festival 2020 Now Online

July 16, 2020 by Teresa Wang

What do logic puzzles, mime, rap music, magic tricks, and origami have in common?  Enjoy them all at the NYC Math Festival on Saturday, July 18, between 2:00 pm and 8:15 pm EDT (New York), with a pre-festival slideshow starting at 1:30 pm EDT (New York).  For the first time ever, this NYC-based festival will be online and accessible to everyone around the world!

Mathematical delights await.  Kickstart your brain with a “Brainteaser Kahoot” challenge, or work out a logic puzzle with a retired pro football player and mathematician.  Learn a mathemagical card trick from a Fields medalist that you can use on your friends, and watch as a former world record holder awes you by solving a Rubik’s Cube with his feet in under 20 seconds.

Space in this year’s NYC Math Festival is limited.  Registration will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.  One price is good for all family members who reside in a single household and who will watch from a single computer connection.  All attendees may enter and exit events throughout the day.

See the full schedule and register for the festival at nycmath.momath.org.

MoMath Museum Hosts: “Ask a Mathematician Anything!” – FREE Virtual Event

MoMath Museum Hosts: "Ask a Mathematician Anything!" - FREE Virtual Event

Have you had a chance to visit the National Museum of Mathematics? If not, fear not; even though they are currently closed, they are offering a free and fun virtual workshop. Have you or your kids ever wanted to ask a mathematician something, maybe about a curious new idea you have, or a concept you’d like to understand better?  Don’t know whom to ask?  Here’s your chance!  MoMath’s Dean of Academic Content and Rutgers Math Professor Alex Kontorovich will host a free, one-hour session, to get all of those burning questions answered.

Come with your own questions, or just join to listen in.  All are welcome, and no question is too basic (although plenty may be too hard!).

FiDi Families Insiders: This event is free, but registration is required and the number of participants is limited.

Date: Thursday, May 7th

Time: 4pm (EDT)

RSVP: Required

For more information and to register, visit their website HERE.

Random Walk on Wall Street

Random Walk on Wall Street. MathHappening: A Random Walk on Wall Street is brought to us by the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath).

This event will bring together math-lovers from Lower Manhattan and around the city to make history by creating the largest-ever human normal curve. Coin flips, small steps, and a giant group march will result in a huge human histogram showing the famous “normal curve” of statistics.

Date: Wednesday, May 11th [Read more…] about Random Walk on Wall Street

NYC city kids...(scratch that) NYC tweens have tak NYC city kids...(scratch that) NYC tweens have taken over Florida and we couldn’t be happier. Now I understand why they call Miami/FL “NY South”. We have been lucky to catch up with sooo many of our school families and friends.

Grateful that our kids (and parents) get this socialization after a year of remote learning.

Friends are the best gift ever. Memories of a lifetime. Grateful that we had the best weather, so many outdoor activities and expert mask-wearers.
