Summer Family Fun Ideas from Modernize

June 30, 2015 by Denise Courter

FiDi Families was recently introduced to a new website that allows visitors to gather ideas and get a glimpse into how other homeowners have transformed their homes. Plus, visitors to the site will have a chance to connect with a professional, to help make your decor and home improvement ideas a reality. We have loved scrolling through their website to get inspiration as we redecorate our NYC apartment. Their team will be contributing articles to FiDi Families and we hope you can get some great inspiration from this site, so you to can Modernize.

Fun things to do at Home this Summer

Are your kids already starting to pull the “I’m bored” routine? Summer can be tough if you haven’t signed your kids up for a million activities to keep them out of the house but luckily there are some fun things you can do at home to keep things interesting and keep the complaining to a minimum.

Movie Day

Although you certainly want to limit the amount of screen time your kids are getting this summer, it can be really fun to spend an entire day lounging around eating healthy but delicious snacks and watching movies that the whole family can enjoy. Let each family member choose their favorite movie and let the movie marathon begin. You can integrate fun games like movie trivia and move-your-body challenges like a set of jumping jacks that must be completed between each film.

Water Wars

The heat of summer is the perfect time to get wet with a variety of different water-related activities. If you have access to a pool then set up some fun games or challenges for your kids that make it new and exciting. Or go for an oldie but goodie with a sprinkler and slip n slide. If you have super young kids you can even arm them with a spray bottle and let them “water” all of the plants. They will likely end up watering each other and having a blast.

Get in the Kitchen

Kids love when you give them the opportunity to make their own food so depending on their age ranges you can assign different days of the week when they are in charge of making dinner. Older kids can plan out a menu and prepare the entire meal while younger kids can be given specific assignments like stirring or pouring. One of my favorite meals to make with super young children is homemade pizza. Even a one year old can enjoy rolling out the pizza dough, spreading around the sauce and sprinkling the cheese. Just be sure to provide aprons (or even waterproof smocks) because they are likely to make a mess!

Hopefully some of these ideas have sparked an interest for your family or given you the inspiration to try another idea altogether. I’ve found that kids really aren’t bored when the whole family gets involved. Their “I’m bored” pleas tend to actually be cries for attention rather than actual boredom. What they are trying to tell you is that they’ve exhausted all of their own ideas and want you to get involved. So try one of these ideas or one of your own and hang in there, summer will be over before you know it!

One of our favorite traditions is displaying our h One of our favorite traditions is displaying our holiday cards on our wall. It’s been so fun to see pictures of our friends with their kids, their 4-legged pets or a beautiful card with no pictures and a note. The hard part is deciding when to take them down. In an effort to stay connected and to keep the conversation going with the kids, I think this year we will keep them up for a while longer. Connectivity is our theme for 2021 and grateful to see friends and family on our holiday wall this year. Any traditions we should know about for the new year? Please share!
