FiDi Families Roundup – Playgrounds with Water Features and Splash Pads!

June 21, 2017 by Cari Gelber

Summer is officially here and one of the best resources New Yorker’s have to stay cool is access to water features at local playgrounds. We have curated a list of some of our favorite downtown playgrounds and parks with water, to ensure kids of all ages stay cool this summer. Check out some of our favorite splash pads in Lower Manhattan.

FiDi Families Insiders: Always travel with a bathing suit, you never know when you’ll discover a secret hideaway with a sprinkler or fountain!

Pier 25
Hands down our favorite watering hole, with an oversized water play area featuring dump buckets, water hoses, various sprinklers and water fountains. In addition to their water area, the 25,000 square foot playground has a climbing wall, multiple slides, sandbox and swings (for both big and small). There’s a mini-golf course and beach volleyball court and a snack stand.

Address: West Side Highway at North Moore Street. Learn more HERE

Teardrop Park
In our opinion, this is one of the best kept secrets of Battery Park. The small but perfect park is hidden behind a jungle of lush plants and trees. It’s filled with rock formations of all heights to climb on and water to wade through. Kids love this park because of the extremely long, high slide that goes right into a pit of sand. Stadium seating makes it easy for grownups to watch all the fun.
Address: Warren Street & North End Avenue.

Washington Market Park
This is a Lower Manhattan family favorite as they have thought of everything a parent could want at a playground. This incredibly park has three separate jungle gym areas, separated by age. A small climbing section in the sand for tots, a more complex section with ladders, slides and a wooden train for kids to play in and the third option is the largest section for older kids; bigger jungle gym area, a rope wall and sprinkler to cool off in. You can also bring your soccer ball to kick around their large open field or pack a picnic and eat lunch at the picnic tables lining the park. Throughout the Summer and Fall,  they offer concerts and movie nights.
Address: Chambers Street & Greenwich.

Rockefeller Playground

With a wall of  fountains and fun hippo’s that spray water, this is a great destination for younger kids. Small swings and an event smaller slide that’s perfect for your toddlers’ first solo ride is on one side of the playground while the other side is for the climbers and older kids. A web-like net to walk through (or jump on) is a fun addition as well as their merry-go-round that kids need to peddle their bikes in order to keep it moving. Right outside the playground is a huge lawn with activities run by Battery Park Conservancy daily from free soccer and basketball classes, to arts n’crafts. If you are into games like knock hockey and ping ping, stop by the little shack and rent them for free.
Address: North End Avenue & River Terrace.

Imagination Playground
Designed by famous architect David Rockwell, Imagination Playground is filled with oversize foam blue blocks that allows them to build and create whatever they can come with. With a large sand pit and enclosed tunnel slide, the playground also offers a great sized water play area and a deck lined with umbrellas to provide some much needed shade!

Address: John Street, between South Street and Front Street.

Wildlife Conservation Society Announces “120 Ways #NYisWild” Campaign.

The Wildlife Conservation Society is a wonderful resource for New York families. My kids and I have loved visiting some of their amazing destinations including the Bronx Zoo and the Central Park Zoo. But, did you know that they also operate the New York Aquarium, Prospect Park Zoo and the Queens Zoo?!

This summer, the Bronx Zoo will turn NYC into a city-wide social photo safari by inviting consumers to learn about “120 Ways #NYisWild.”  The more people share their in-park photos using the #NYisWild hashtag, the more chances they have to win a trip to Belize, one of the locations where the Wildlife Conservation Society does some exciting and relevant conservation work.

The “120” part of this acknowledges and celebrates 120 years of conservation since the founding of this organization, and 100 of the 120 ways take place in WCS parks: Bronx Zoo, the New York Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo & Queens Zoo.

Here’s what you need to know about #NYisWild:

  • To celebrate the 120thanniversary of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), a city-wide campaign called #NYisWild is turning our concrete jungle into a summer-long photo safari
  • New Yorkers can participate by choosing from 120 “wild” attractions around the city and capturing a photo of each for a chance to win irresistible prizes
  • There are several prize levels available, including a special Grand Prize. Entry to win these prizes increases for hitting certain milestones (ex: Escape for 2 to Belize for completing 10/120 or Whale Watching Tour for 4 With WCS Scientists for completing 50/120).
  • From April to August participants can capture each attraction using Instagram or Twitter with #NYisWild and also hashtagging the number of the clue (ex: #NYisWild, #84)
  • Keep track of all progress on NYisWild.com by logging in via an Instagram or Twitter account
    • This site also serves as the only destination for all news & information about this new campaign.
  • Download the full list of all 120 attractions and have fun exploring! Direct download link here:  http://bit.ly/NYisWildOnePager

FiDi Families Insiders: There is an exclusive discount for 20% off all tickets purchased only through NYisWild.com.

With Spring weather making its way here, #NYisWild is the perfect way to spend a day outdoors! Be sure to check it out and have fun taking part in all of the #NYisWild activities!

Life is funny. A year ago I was celebrating 20 yea Life is funny. A year ago I was celebrating 20 years of calling NYC home. A year later, our family is on a crazy career adventure in Miami, with a lot of unknowns.

But, we do know that we only get one life to live and jumping in feet first is the only way to live life to the fullest, at least in our minds 😂.

We are already in love with the Miami weather, the happy people, the gorgeous beaches 🏝 and the day tripping way of life. We arrived in FL w a suitcase each and a mask 😷. Happy that we are surrounded by mask-wearers. Wasn’t sure what to expect. But, we will be back in NYC this summer. Lots of decisions to make between now and then. But also lots of fun and exploring over the next few months.

The silver lining of the Covid world we live in is remote learning allows us to travel and say yes to new beginnings. Stay tuned for updates on the next chapter for our website, too.
