Free Family Film Screening of "Attla" the Alaskan Native Dogsled Racer

 

Enjoy a family film in Lower Manhattan at the National Museum of the American Indian. Join us in a free screening of Attla, which tells the story of George Attla, an Alaska Native dogsled racer who, with one good leg and fierce determination, rose to international fame and became a sports hero. A discussion follows with director Catharine Axley and Amanda Attla (Athabascan/Yup’ik).

Date: Thursday, January 23rd

Time: 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Location: One Bowling Green (National Museum of the American Indian)

 National Museum of the American Indian Presents:  Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos

Enjoy a fun-filled day for the entire family at the annual celebration of El día de los muertos, or the Day of the Dead. Traditional dances honoring ancestors will be performed by the Aztec group Cetiliztli Nauhcampa around the community ofrenda, or altar. Hands-on activities include embellishing paper skull masks, decorating skeleton puppets, creating paper flowers, and painting plaster skulls.

Date: Saturday, November 2nd

Time: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm

Location: One Bowling Green

Cost: Free

Kick off Hispanic Heritage Month with an evening dance party featuring live music by award-winning singer-songwriter Irka Mateo (Taíno). DJ Max “Drlacxos” Cueto will open and close the evening.

Enjoy the Museum’s annual Children’s Festival and explore the Taíno culture of the Caribbean. Hands-on activities include hammock making with natural fibers, decorating clay pots and crafting a maraca or magnet to take home.  Music and dancing led by Irka Mateo (Taíno). Bobby Gonzalez (Taíno) offers storytelling.

National Museum of the American Indian - Taíno Workshop (FREE)

 

Did you the National Museum of the American Indian hosts a series of family-friendly events and entry is free, 7 days a week? Visit the Smithsonian Museum and learn about the Taíno, who are one of the Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean. Join educators in the galleries to learn more about Taíno history, culture, and worldviews from museum specialist Jorge Estévez (Taíno). Through cultural materials and live demonstrations, Jorge facilitates discussion of the persistence and depth of Taíno lifeways and living traditions.

Date: Monday, September 24th (recurring every Monday!)
