The long holiday weekend is almost here and what better way to celebrate the 4th of July holiday and the summer than by sailing the NY Harbor?! The tall ship “Pioneer” is among the many treasures that you will find at Pier 16 and at the Seaport Museum. Set sail on Friday for a sunset sail that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Take a beautiful Sail Around New York on a historic 1885 schooner! See the sights of New York Harbor from the decks of the historic 130-year-old schooner PIONEER. The vessel, first launched in 1885, was built as an iron-hulled sloop to carry cargo along the Delaware River. Bring your family for an afternoon sail, a date for a sunset sail, or just yourself to enjoy history at sea. Get a new perspective on New York City with a sail on PIONEER. The best way to experience the harbor, without crowds, cars, and chaos. Bring a picnic lunch or dinner, afternoon snack, beverages or a bottle of wine to enjoy on your sail. PIONEER sails rain or shine.

Date: Friday, July 5th

Time:  7:00 pm

Location for boarding: Pier 16

Box Office: 12 Fulton Street

Sail Aboard “The Pioneer” with the South Street Seaport Museum (Monday Sail PROMO CODE)

Sail Aboard "The Pioneer" with the South Street Seaport Museum (Monday Sail PROMO CODE)

The South Street Seaport Museum has launched their sailing season, aboard the schooner known as “The Pioneer”. Enjoy your Memorial Weekend aboard this gorgeous historic schooner.

Do you know the history of the shipping industry? Board the schooner to learn more, but some fun facts to know, as shared by the SSSM: In the days before paved roads, small coastal schooners such as Pioneer were the delivery trucks of their era, carrying various cargoes between coastal communities: lumber and stone from the islands of Maine, brick on the Hudson River, and oyster shell on the Chesapeake Bay. Almost all American cargo sloops and schooners were wood, but because she was built in what was then this country’s center of iron shipbuilding, Pioneer had a wrought-iron hull. She was the first of only two cargo sloops built of iron in this country and is the only iron-hulled American merchant sailing vessel still in existence.

Today Pioneer is an award-winning sail training vessel teaching volunteers of all kinds, traditional maritime skills, and the art of tall ship sailing. Visitors can board Pioneer for 2-hour day and evening cruises as she sails New York Harbor May through October. Pioneer offers special sails and programs and is available for private charter throughout her season.

One of our favorite traditions is displaying our h One of our favorite traditions is displaying our holiday cards on our wall. It’s been so fun to see pictures of our friends with their kids, their 4-legged pets or a beautiful card with no pictures and a note. The hard part is deciding when to take them down. In an effort to stay connected and to keep the conversation going with the kids, I think this year we will keep them up for a while longer. Connectivity is our theme for 2021 and grateful to see friends and family on our holiday wall this year. Any traditions we should know about for the new year? Please share!
